Finding Purpose and Making a Difference: A Look at Careers in Human Services

The desire to help others and contribute to a better world is a powerful motivator. If this resonates with you, a career in human services could be a fulfilling path. This broad field encompasses various professions dedicated to supporting individuals, families, and communities facing diverse challenges. Whether it’s providing emotional support, advocating for change, or empowering individuals to reach their full potential, human services careers offer an opportunity to make a tangible impact on the lives of others.

The vastness of the field itself is a testament to the diverse needs it addresses. From social workers and counselors providing mental health support to community outreach workers tackling issues like poverty and homelessness, the common thread is the dedication to serving and empowering individuals and communities.

Addressing Growing Needs and Diverse Populations:

The need for human services professionals is projected to grow significantly in the coming years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, social work occupations are expected to see a growth of 12% between 2022 and 2032, much faster than the average for all occupations [1]. This growth is attributed to factors like an aging population, increasing awareness of mental health issues, and the rising demand for support services amongst diverse populations.

Diversity and inclusion are crucial aspects of human services. Culturally competent professionals are vital in addressing the unique needs and experiences of different communities. Whether it’s working with individuals experiencing language barriers, immigrants navigating new environments, or LGBTQ+ communities facing discrimination, human services professionals play a critical role in promoting equity and ensuring everyone receives the support they need.

Beyond Traditional Roles: A Spectrum of Opportunities:

While social work and counseling might be the first professions that come to mind, the human services field offers a much wider range of opportunities. Here’s a glimpse into some diverse roles:

  • Community Health Workers: These professionals bridge the gap between healthcare and underserved communities, providing education, outreach, and support [2].
  • Substance Abuse Counselors: They assist individuals struggling with addiction by providing counseling, support groups, and referrals to treatment programs [3].
  • Child Advocates: These individuals champion the well-being of children in various settings, ensuring their safety and advocating for their rights [4].
  • Family Support Specialists: They work with families facing challenges, offering guidance, resources, and support to strengthen family dynamics and stability [5].

Rewarding Challenges and Making a Difference:

A career in human services is not without its challenges. Professionals often encounter individuals facing complex and difficult situations. However, the satisfaction of witnessing positive change and making a real difference in someone’s life is a powerful motivator.

The human services field also plays a crucial role in addressing societal issues like mental health, poverty, and addiction. According to a 2023 New York Times article, “the number of people who died by suicide in the United States increased by 3% from 2019 to 2021, to 45,967” [6]. By providing essential support and resources, human services professionals can contribute to prevention efforts and offer hope to individuals struggling with these issues.

Finding Your Path in Human Services:

If you’re passionate about helping others and making a positive impact, a career in human services is worth exploring, get involved. Reach out to organizations and ask to volunteer. Research different specializations within the field, consider volunteer opportunities, and connect with professionals to gain insights. Remember, the journey starts with a desire to help, and the opportunities within human services offer endless possibilities to put that passion into action. These programs offer valuable academic credit, connect classroom learning to real-world contexts, and provide unparalleled access to faculty expertise. Here are some examples of such programs:

Alternative Spring Breaks with Service Learning:

Beyond the realm of traditional academia lies the world of “alternative spring breaks.” These trips, often organized by student organizations in collaboration with non-profits, combine volunteer work with cultural exploration. 5 Ways to Spend Your Sign-On Bonus

Receiving a sign on bonus is a great benefit that many employers are not offering to attract top talent. If you are in this position, it might be difficult to decide what to do with the extra cash. This article will list five great ideas of what you should to do improve your quality of life with your bonus.

Schedule a Weekend Getaway

Starting a new job probably means you won’t have any vacation time, but you will likely have two days off, at some point, over the next month or two. Use your bonus to take a trip to Niagara Falls. It is beautiful this time of year.

USA Hot Springs

Pay off Bills

The best idea for your long term quality of life is to pay down your debit with your bonus. It may not seem like a fun idea but when you are debt free you will feel less stress and more happiness so it’s always a good idea to do the responsible thing, even if it’s not as much fun as a weekend getaway.

Invest in Yourself

Education has been getting a bad rap in the media lately. Education costs are rising and students are not getting a return on their investment. This is true that there are many scam artists who will try to take your money for some type of “education program”. Do your due diligence and look for educational programs that really interest you. Check out what is being offered at your local community college. Earning a degree will enrich your life in ways that you could have never imagined. It will improve your life to learn something new.

Save for Something Amazing

Do you want the new sports car or to remodel your kitchen? Your bonus could be an opportunity to start saving for something amazing. Go to the bank and open up a savings account and set it up to have a certain amount withdrawal from your check each pay period. If you set the process up now, you wont even miss the money from your check.

Open an IRA or Buy Digital Currencies

Everyone hopes to someday have the opportunity to retire. With some of the changes being purposed to social security, if you are far from retirement the chances seem less likely that SS will exist for you. Therefore, using your bonus to secure your future with an IRA or for the risk-taker, buying a little Bitcoin could help to enhance your quality of life in the long run. It is always best to seek the advice of a financial advisor before making any kind of investment.

I hope this helps you put your money to good use as you are on your way to living your dream life.

The Power of Positivity: How a Positive Outlook Can Boost Your Health

A positive outlook is more than just a sunny disposition; it’s a powerful tool that can significantly impact your overall health and well-being. When you approach life with optimism and a belief in your ability to overcome challenges, you’re not only improving your mental state but also strengthening your physical health.

The Science of Positivity

Numerous studies have shown a strong correlation between positive thinking and better health outcomes. Here’s how a positive outlook can benefit you:

  • Reduced Stress: A positive outlook can help you cope with stress more effectively. When faced with challenges, optimists are more likely to see them as temporary setbacks rather than insurmountable obstacles. This reduces the production of stress hormones like cortisol, which can have detrimental effects on your cardiovascular system, immune system, and mental health.
  • Improved Immune Function: Research suggests that positive emotions can boost the immune system. Studies have shown that people with a positive outlook may have higher levels of antibodies, which help fight off infections.
  • Enhanced Heart Health: Positive thinking has been linked to lower blood pressure and reduced risk of heart disease. Optimists tend to engage in healthier behaviors, such as exercising regularly and eating a balanced diet, which further contribute to heart health.
  • Better Mental Well-being: A positive outlook can alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. It can also increase self-esteem and resilience, making it easier to cope with life’s challenges.

Proof That It Works

  • A study published in the journal Health Psychology found that cancer patients with a positive outlook were more likely to experience longer survival rates and better quality of life compared to those with a more pessimistic outlook.
  •  In the world of sports, a positive mindset is crucial for peak performance. Athletes who cultivate a belief in their abilities and focus on their strengths are more likely to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

Daily Affirmations: A Pathway to Positivity

Daily affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself regularly. They can help to reprogram your subconscious mind and cultivate a more positive outlook. Here’s a 30-day affirmation practice designed to help you find a career you love:

Day 1-10: Self-Discovery

  • “I am open to exploring new possibilities.”
  • “I trust my intuition to guide me towards my passions.”
  • “I am worthy of a fulfilling and rewarding career.”

Day 11-20: Identifying Your Values

  • “I value work that aligns with my personal values.”
  • “I am passionate about making a positive impact on the world.”
  • “I am committed to finding a career that brings me joy and fulfillment.”

Day 21-30: Taking Action

  • “I am taking concrete steps towards my career goals.”
  • “I am confident in my ability to succeed in my chosen field.”
  • “I am grateful for the opportunities that come my way.”

Focus on People, Not Paper: Your Resume Isn’t Your Ticket to a Career

Career changers often get caught in a resume black hole. We obsess over every word, every format, and every potential typo. But the truth is, your resume might be the least important factor in landing your dream job.

The Resume Reality Check

Let’s break down some resume myths:

  • Keyword stuffing: While it’s essential to include relevant keywords to bypass applicant tracking systems (ATS), don’t sacrifice readability for keyword density. A well-written resume that speaks to your qualifications is more valuable.
  • Typos matter: Absolutely, avoid typos. Pay special attention to your email address. I’ve seen resumes that have the email addresses with a space after the @ symbol. This resume will never be found. If you copy and paste your resume into a new file some of these errors may get picked up in Google Docs for example.
  • Be concise: Yes, keep your resume to one or two pages. No one likes to read anymore and hiring managers may have 200 resumes in front of them. Don’t expect for them to see your value in all your pages of information. Make it simple for them to choose you.
  • Use strong adjectives: Descriptive language can enhance your resume. Quantify your achievements whenever possible to make a stronger impact. Keep all your achievements in one file that is really a CV, then succinctly and specifically pick out the achievements that most closely match the job description then re-write each statement so it clearly matches what the job requires.

The Real Key to Career Change: People and Relationships

While your resume might get you in the door, it’s your network and personal brand that will land you the job.

  • Networking is your secret weapon: Building relationships with people in your target industry is far more effective than perfecting your resume. Attend industry events, join local networking communities, and leverage LinkedIn to connect with potential employers and mentors.
  • Education is more than a degree: Pursuing further education can be invaluable, but it’s not just about the credential. Schools often foster workforce learning communities that can lead to lifelong connections and career opportunities. In Indianapolis, there is one called Operation Dream Landing. This network creates the work-learn connection built for everyone to succeed.
  • People hire people: Companies rely on referrals and employee recommendations before turning to external candidates. Focus on building trust and rapport with people in your network. This means offering help to others and supporting their dreams as well as your own.
  • Cover letters are optional: While they can be a valuable tool to tell your story, many employers are more interested in your resume and LinkedIn profile.

Discover Your Ideal Career Path

Before you dive into resume writing, take the time to understand your career goals and target industries. Tools like the FREE HIF logic career signal survey can help you identify your strengths, interests, and values, guiding you towards a fulfilling career path.

Remember: Your resume is a snapshot of your experience, not a comprehensive representation of your value. Invest your time and energy in building relationships, developing your skills, and understanding your career aspirations. That’s where true career success begins.

Teacher Shortage: Emergency Certification in Pennsylvania

The national teacher shortage is a pressing issue, and Pennsylvania is no exception. With a significant drop in new teacher certifications and a rise in emergency certifications, schools are looking for qualified individuals to fill the gaps. If you’ve ever considered a career in education, now might be the perfect time to jump in and make a difference.

Understanding the Shortage

The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) reports a stark decline in the number of new certified teachers entering the workforce. Meanwhile, emergency certifications have skyrocketed. This means schools are increasingly relying on individuals who haven’t completed the traditional teacher certification programs.

While emergency certifications help fill vacant positions, it’s important to remember they are temporary solutions. Ideally, educators will pursue full certification to ensure they have the necessary training and skills to provide students with the best possible learning experience.

Considering an Emergency Certificate in PA? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you hold a bachelor’s degree and have a passion for education, an emergency certificate in Pennsylvania might be a good first step. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

  1. Eligibility: To be eligible, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. There’s no subject requirement, but the certificate will be issued for a specific content area based on your degree and experience. https://www.education.pa.gov/Educators/Certification/Pages/default.aspx
  1. School District Application: School districts are responsible for issuing emergency certificates. Contact your desired district’s human resources department to inquire about their specific requirements and application process. Here is a list of the Schools by County who need certified teachers in PA https://www.education.pa.gov/Educators/RecruitRecog/CareerOpps/Pages/default.aspx
  1. PDE Emergency Certificate Application: Once you have the school district’s approval, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) will process your emergency certificate application. You can find the application and detailed instructions on the PDE’s website: PA Department of Education Emergency Certification: https://www.education.pa.gov/Educators/Certification/PAEducators/Pages/Emergency-Permits.aspx

Additional Resources:

  • The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) offers a wealth of information on teacher education programs. Explore their website to see if a certification program aligns with your interests: PASSHE Teacher Education: https://www.passhe.edu/students/explore.html
  • For a personal touch, consider contacting the Education Department at King’s College, affiliated with Notre Dame. King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA has some of the best faculty in PA and they can provide specific guidance on transitioning into a teaching career: https://www.kings.edu/academics/undergraduate_majors/education

Remember, obtaining an emergency certificate is just the first step. While it allows you to begin teaching, it’s crucial to pursue full teacher certification to ensure your long-term success in the classroom.

Conclusion

The teacher shortage presents an opportunity for passionate individuals to make a real difference. If you’re considering a career in education, Pennsylvania needs you! Explore the emergency certification process and consider pursuing full certification to become a valuable asset in our PA schools.

Dreaming of Island Adventure?

Admit it. There are times when you wish you could get away from it all by moving to your own private island. Well, some cruise passengers actually can at least for a day. Each of the following cruise lines below offer passengers a day of fun in the sun. For many cruisers, this stop is the highlight of the trip. After all, what could be better than sitting on a white-sand beach, drinking a pina colada and soaking in the rays without crowds? If you are interested and you have extra cash rent your very own private island.

All of these islands have pristine shores, swaying palm trees, aquamarine waters and lots of ocean-side adventure. There usually are fees for shore excursions and equipment rental. Every destination offers something a little different for cruise passengers.

Even at first glance, CocoCay looks like the quintessential Caribbean hideaway. There are wide stretches of beach in quiet coves, island huts in bright Caribbean pinks and blues, and a colorful straw market offering Bahamian crafts and goods.

Many of the island buildings look brand new and they are. In 2002, the company invested more than US$ 21 million to turn this 140-acre (0.5 km) slip of land into a destination their passengers would never forget. Nature trails wind through the isle, which is home to wild chickens, peacocks and occasional iguanas. Those seeking solitude will enjoy the hammocks that are hung under coconut trees in quiet locations.

Sea lovers have plenty of activities to choose from. Hop on a jet ski and speed across waters so clear that you can see orange starfish 20 feet below, or don a snorkel mask and explore life under the sea up close.

For a great view of the island, try your hand at parasailing. You’ll soar 200-400 feet in the air and maybe even take a cooling dip in the water before returning to the boat.

Children will enjoy Caylana’s Castle Cove and SeaTrek Aqua Park. Its floating sand castle and aquatic trampolines are just the things for those who are young at heart.

A staff of 45 people lives on CocoCay, and it’s obvious they take pride in keeping the island’s natural beauty in top condition. Their pampering service makes the island experience so pleasurable that you won’t want to leave when dusk falls all too soon.

“Disney knows children, so it’s no wonder that they feel at home on Castaway Cay”

The cruise ship docks right at the island (other cruise ships use tender boats to ferry passengers back and forth), so youngsters can head right down the ship’s ramp and out to explore Castaway Cay. There is a beach just for families, and Scuttle’s Cove is a safe and fun club for children. Parents need some time on their own, so there is Serenity Bay, a secluded beach for adults. For a little pampering, have a relaxing massage in the open-air cabanas at the seaside spa.

Game for a little exploration? Then grab a bike (child seats are available for little ones) and hit the trails. This is, after all, a secluded island getaway, and there are miles of empty shoreline and tropical forest to explore.

If you prefer the water, check out the Walking and Kayak Nature Adventure. Participants walk with a guide through the island’s lush fauna and kayak through an ecologically sensitive mangrove environment. If paddling wears you out, just jump in for a refreshing swim in the crystal clear island waters.

Teens can get into their own adventure on The Wild Side, an excursion that includes snorkeling, biking and kayaking. Families who want to adventure together can try the Seahorse Catamaran Snorkel Adventure. This easy 45-minute sail takes you out to calm waters and unspoiled coral reefs. Even younger children will enjoy floating in the turquoise Caribbean Sea with schools of colored fish.

View of the Caribbean Sea

Visitors to the tiny islet of Motu Mahana (Polynesian for sunlit island) are greeted with the sounds of Polynesia. Les Gauguines, an eight-woman song and dance troupe, perform beguiling love songs in their Polynesian tongue while guests enjoy a scrumptious feast under the shade of thatched huts. After lunch, guests can relax in the sea or wade for yards in the shallow waters while waiters wearing bathing suits offer tropical drinks to those in need of refreshment.

Try out the complimentary water sports like kayaking or snorkeling. For a different experience, board a motorized outrigger canoe and head to the beautiful island lagoon of Taha’a. Taha’a is known for two things: producing vanilla and black pearls.

Guests can take a four-wheel drive tour into the hills to tour the vanilla plantations or view French Polynesia’s rare jewel, the black pearl, at the Motu Pearl Farm . From there, head to the lagoon for some quality time with the region’s underwater fauna. There is even a small lagoonarium where rays, turtles, sharks and fish are enclosed in four different pools.
